Online gambling is an increasingly popular pastime in the United States. It encompasses casino games, poker, virtual poker, sports betting, and other forms of gambling. While not all states have legalized online gambling, a number of them have begun offering certain types of wagers. In the future, most Americans will be able to place bets on sports events from their homes, workplaces, or from their mobile devices. Some states, including Indiana, have taken a more proactive approach to offering more robust online gaming options.
Ohio is set to launch legalized online sports betting in January of 2023. Although the state has not yet offered online casinos, several Ohio casino properties have already made the move to offer online gambling services. This is a good indication that it will be a relatively short time before the state will also be able to offer online poker.
Before 2009, most forms of straightforward gambling were illegal in the state. However, in the past few years, Ohio has changed its policies on gambling and is now the fifth most populous state in the country with legalized casinos. As of this writing, there are a total of eleven true gambling locations in the state. The state has taken steps to encourage businesses to apply for licenses to operate sports betting kiosks. During the summer, the Ohio Gaming Commission accepted applications for operator licenses.
Sports betting is more popular than other forms of gambling. Hundreds of thousands of people bet on sports games each day. Because of this, legalized online sports betting is a hot topic in the state. Several retail and online sportsbooks have already signed deals to begin offering wagers on major sporting events. Many of these companies are working with two tribes, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Sun Online Casino, to offer the wagers.
The Ohio Legislature has taken a hard look at the state’s online gambling laws and decided that, while there are certain types of online wagers that are already available, it was time to offer more robust gaming options. One of the first steps in this direction was to introduce legislation to permit the legalization of sports betting. Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 29 into law in late December of 2017. Despite the fact that the bill abets the online gambling industry, it was a long road to its eventual success.
Before Illinois’s new sports betting laws went into effect, the state’s casinos did not offer online sportsbooks. Instead, they offered many forms of wagering, including lotteries, pool-selling, and conducting bolita games. However, this was not enough to keep the state’s casinos from offering more types of gambling.
On July 2, 2018, Maryland became the second state to legalize sports betting. During the months before the law passed, dozens of retailers and online sportsbooks announced partnerships. Ultimately, the sportsbook industry soared. Within weeks, several sportsbooks opened. There are more than 1,300 businesses prequalified to host sports betting kiosks.
